VOLUNTEERS IN POLICING JOB BULLETIN

General Volunteer


The City of Chandler Police Department is currently seeking qualified individuals interested in joining our team as a General Volunteer. The General Volunteers are civilians who are trained to assist our team with assigned duties for which they have been trained.  They will report to the Volunteer Coordinator and the onsite supervisor.  This is a non-paid volunteer position.  The work hours or schedules for these positions will vary.


Who we are


The City of Chandler Police Department, consisting of 348 sworn officers and 192 civilians, serves a growing population of approximately 290,000 residents.  The organization is divided into three main divisions, one bureau, and many sections/units.   The Patrol Operations Division three precincts, 1) Main Station - Downtown & North Chandler, 2) Desert Breeze - West Chandler, and 3) Chandler Heights - South Chandler, work in concert with the Criminal Investigations Bureau, Operational Support Bureau, and Professional Services Division to meet the needs of the community.   The members of the Chandler Police Department are dedicated to the advancement of community policing and the development of a partnership with our citizens.  Our mission is, “To maintain a safe, vibrant community through meaningful engagement and continuous organizational improvement.”  We are committed to being a world-class leader in law enforcement.  We will pursue and engage the best trained, equipped, and committed professionals who demonstrate the highest standards of performance and best policing practices in partnership with the community.

Professional Staff Volunteers:


Volunteers as part of the Professional Staff, are assigned to assist the civilian staff (and in some cases the sworn staff) of the Chandler Police Department and may work from any of the Police Station locations on clerical and/or general service tasks, or specialized tasks.  Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and familiarity with computer systems is needed but more specializes skill sets may be required for certain assignments.  Potential Professional Staff Volunteer assignments could include, but are not limited to:



Volunteers in Policing Unit:


Volunteers assist the VIP Unit with any assigned tasks to support the operations of the Volunteer in Policing team and will work out of the Chandler Heights Substation.  Volunteers may assist with:

  • Data entry, filing, and excel spreadsheets. 
  • Canva projects.
  • Creating Sign-Up Genius sign ups for events.
  • Photography.
  • Audio Visual set up.

Planning and Research Unit:


Volunteers assist the Planning Unit with police planning & research functions which may include program evaluation, strategic planning, staffing analyses, financial analysis, survey design and data collection. Please note this position requires 4 years of complex analytic experience and a bachelor's degree.


Family Advocacy Center Volunteers:


Volunteers assist in the Victim Services Unit as crime victims work with law enforcement and victim advocates.  To serve in this position, volunteers must be available M-F during business hours.  Volunteers may assist with:

  • Welcoming and escorting victims and other agency investigators into the unit.
  • Ensuring access to the facility is secured and monitored.
  • Conduct phone satisfaction surveys.

Crime Prevention Volunteers:


Volunteers may assist with various Crime Prevention Programs and will work out of the Chandler Heights Substation.  Volunteers may be assigned to:

  • Senior Lock Box Program to maintain and verify accurate information, inspect and update lock boxes as needed. 
  • Cadet Program to help coordinate and lead the CPD Cadets.
  • Rape Aggression Defense Program instructors with proper credentials and certifications.
  • Other Crime Prevention programs provided certain qualifications are met.


Hiring Unit Volunteers:


Volunteers may assist the Hiring Unit with updating promotional, social media and marketing materials and will work from the Downtown Precinct.  Volunteers may assist with:

  • Paperwork and/or filing.
  • Updating social media and content creation projects.
  • Graphic design projects.



Investigations Unit Volunteers:


Volunteers may assist with tasks related to investigations based on volunteer applicant's previous work experience and qualifications, Unit requests, and with approval by Chain of Command. These volunteers may work be assigned to work from specific Police station locations.


Minimum Qualifications:


  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Must be a US Citizen at the time of application submittal
  • Must commit to serve 16 hours per month. Consideration for fewer hours may be taken on a case-by-case basis, departmental needs, and residency status.
     
     

Supervision:


Work is performed under the supervision of a civilian supervisor or manager.  This position does not supervise others.

 This is an unpaid volunteer opportunity.  A register of qualified candidates will be active for 6 months should another position become available.


The City of Chandler will conduct a pre-selection background check as a condition of placement.  If selected, all applicants hired will be required to be fingerprinted with successful results as a condition of continued placement.

Applicants for employment and volunteer opportunities should be aware of the City of Chandler’s policies concerning the use of drugs and alcohol.   These policies have not been altered by the passage of Proposition 207.  The use of recreational marijuana is a violation of the city’s Drug Free Workplace Policy.  Certain positions within the city are required to submit to a pre-employment drug test.   A positive result for drugs tested under the policy, including recreational marijuana, may be grounds for withdrawal of an offer of employment or volunteer opportunity.  The examination process may vary if determined necessary.
