Steps in the police officer testing selection process for police recruits and police laterals. The selection process is very competitive and may take 3-4 months to complete. We only consider the most highly qualified applicants.

Police officers Reminders.

Invitations will be sent out by e-mail for the physical agility test. The top successful applicants will be invited for an oral board interview. The background investigators will contact the applicants as they progress.

Testing Requrements

  • You must be approximately 20 1/2 years of age at the time of testing and must be 21 years of age at graduation from the academy;
  • Bring picture ID to the testing site. If you do not have a picture ID, you will not be allowed into the testing site;
  • Do not bring any unnecessary items to the testing center to include purses, backpacks, briefcases, cameras, recorders, weapons, etc;
  • Applicants must obtain a passing score on each step of the testing procedure to remain eligible in the selection process;
  • Should an applicant fail any portion they will be removed from consideration and will need to re-apply in the next recruitment;
  • The application process may vary if determined necessary

Lateral Officers Arizona POST Certified Officer Applicants.

In order to apply as an AZPOST certified lateral officer you must be either: be currently employed as an Arizona state certified police officer, have resigned from an Arizona police agency while in good standing, or graduated from a law enforcement academy program through an Arizona college within the last 9 months. Applicants currently certified by AZPOST will not be required to attend the academy.

Lateral Officers Out of State Lateral Police Officer Applicants.

Out-of-state officers must be currently employed as a certified police officer or have resigned from a police agency while in good standing. You must have at least one year of patrol work experience from the date of completing field training, to be given consideration as a lateral officer. Out-of-state lateral officers may be able to gain AZPOST certification through the waiver process, and if successfully completed, will not have to attend an academy.

See the Arizona Peace Officer Standards and Training Board website for waiver details. We will make every effort to have Out-of-state applicants take the Physical Agility Test, complete the oral board interview, firearms qualification, background interview, and polygraph before leaving.

Civilian positions Reminders.

Civilian background packets are to be completed for all civilian (non-police officer) job postings AND intern positions.

Testing Requrements

  • You must be 18 years of age (21 years of age for Detention Officer);
  • Bring picture ID to the interview;
  • Bring all material requested by background investigator;
  • Applicants must obtain a passing score on each step of the testing procedure to remain eligible in the selection process;
  • Should an applicant fail any portion they will be removed from consideration and will need to re-apply in the next recruitment;
