Description:
The City of Chandler Police Department, Detention Unit, is currently seeking qualified individuals interested in joining our team as a Detention Officer. The Chandler Police Detention Unit is open 24 hours a day, 365 days per year, including weekends and holidays. This is a full-time, temporary, non-exempt position with benefits. An initial work schedule of 3/12 then 4/12 is anticipated. A 12-month probationary period is required for this position.
Hiring Incentive:
This position is eligible for a new hire incentive payment of - $1,500 paid in two installments, $750 paid upon hire with first paycheck and $750 paid upon successful completion of probation. You will be required to complete a 12-month probationary period. Rehires and active employees are ineligible for the incentive payment.

The City of Chandler Police Department, consisting of 348 sworn officers and 192 civilians, serves a growing population of approximately 290,000 residents. Who we are looking for:
Our ideal candidate will have a passion for customer service, teamwork, and collaboration. We are looking for someone with experience handling prisoners as a Detention Officer, Corrections Officer, Police Officer, other related position. Arizona POST recognized County or State Detention Officer Certification or equivalent is required for the Detention Officer position.
Essential Duties
- Ensures the safety and security of arrestees, prisoners and the general public.
- Transports prisoners to and from the County jail and City court facilities.
- Assists officers with intake and booking processes and Releases prisoners from jail upon court orders for release or secured bond.
- Oversees the general care and custody of arrestees and detainees and conducts holding facility inspections.

Minimum Qualifications
- A High School Diploma or GED; and
- One (1) year experience in customer service; and successful completion of Arizona POST recognized County or State Detention Officer Certification within six (6) months of hire or promotion; and
- The ability to comply with Arizona POST firearms requirements; and
- A valid Driver's License with acceptable driving record; or
- Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge and abilities necessary to perform the work.
In addition to the minimum requirements above, applicants may fit into one of the following categories:
- Detention Officer (active): Applicants who are actively employed in a detention or corrections position and have successfully graduated from an AZPOST-recognized detention officer academy (or equivalent) will be considered lateral candidates and will not be required to attend an academy.
- Detention Officer (former): Applicants who are not actively employed in detention or corrections but graduated from an AZPOST-recognized detention officer academy (or equivalent) and separated from detention/corrections employment within the past twenty-four (24) months after completing at least two (2) years of detention/corrections service, will not be required to attend an academy.
- Detention Officer Recruit: Applicants who do not possess an AZPOST-recognized Detention Officer Certification (or equivalent) will be required to successfully complete an approved detention officer academy.
Supervision
Work is performed under the supervision of a division supervisor or manager. This position does not supervise others.

The City of Chandler will conduct a pre-employment background check as a condition of employment. An offer of employment is contingent upon acceptable results. All applicants hired will be required to be fingerprinted with successful results as a condition of continued employment. A register of qualified candidates will be active for 6 months should another position become available.

These policies have not been altered by the passage of Proposition 207. The use of recreational marijuana is a violation of the city’s Drug Free Workplace Policy. Certain positions within the city are required to submit to a pre-employment drug test. A positive result for drugs tested under the policy, including recreational marijuana, may be grounds for withdrawal of an offer of employment or volunteer opportunity. The examination process may vary if determined necessary.
